It has been witnessed the emergence of the issue of the importance of eating vegetables in recent years, especially due to concerns about our health, the movement of animal rights defenders and the environment.

Vegetarians are those who do not eat meat, poultry, fish or any animal products, including eggs and dairy products.

There are now four times more vegetarians in the UK than there were four years ago.

So how difficult is it for someone to stop eating meat and start eating vegetables and what are the health benefits?
In the latest episode of Trust Me I'm A Doctor, Dr Giles Yeo decided for a month to see if it was a lifestyle he would consider living.

As Dr. Yeo quickly discovered, one of the most difficult things about starting a vegetarian diet, is that many products that cannot be called meat often use meat in their preparation or cooking.

Along with making sure that you don't eat wrong meat products, one of the main challenges is to rely on vegetables to make sure that you don't miss out on essential nutrients.

Following and eating only vegetarian foods also puts you at risk of lacking vitamin D, which is important for bone health.
Can eating vegetables contribute to good health?
A recent study that brought together the results of 10 studies comparing the health of vegetarians and non-vegetarians versus meat-eaters suggests that there is a possibility.

Researchers found that a person who does not eat meat has a lower risk of heart disease and cancer, despite not having a significant difference in the number of years a person lives.

Another way is that a person who does not eat meat is associated with good health but not with living many years.
The life of those who do not eat meat
Eileen Mbogo

Eileen says despite eating meat until she was about ten years old, she decided to stop when it caused her health problems, especially her skin.

"When I was eating the meat that my mother used to cook for us, I used to get skin irritation, the reason that contributed to me taking a lot of meat, and since then my food has been vegetables," says Eileen

He says that absolutely any meat is beef, goat, chicken and even fish.
"I believe that eating vegetables has contributed to my good health and avoiding diseases, because when I go to the hospital, the doctor tells me that I am in good condition.

He advises those who aim to stop eating meat to do so gradually by reducing the diet or meat food.

Zacheus Otaba.

Zacheus Otaba who is a resident of Turkana in northern Kenya says he stopped eating meat in 2011 when he started experiencing health problems when he was eating meat.

"I used to get stomach problems for two or three days after I ate meat," says Otaba.

He says that before he stopped eating meat and started eating mostly vegetables, he usually ate meat about five times a week, due to the fact that he was working outside and often had food at restaurants.
"What I did was I decided to reduce the amount of food I was eating a day from three to two.

"So I had breakfast at my house, I decided that I will not eat lunch, until I return home in the evening to eat with my family, and so I started to refrain from eating meat gradually."

Otaba says that since he stopped eating meat completely in 2011, he has not experienced the same health problems that used to happen to him when he was eating meat.

"It is good for everyone who has problems when eating meat to understand their situation and not commit to changing their habits and stop eating meat," says Otaba.
