What is an onion? In plants, onions are part of the Liliaceae family, along with garlic and water onions.  

 Although its value is lower than garlic, garlic has ingredients that are very effective in improving the health of the body. 

Onions are part of various foods that we eat every day, including those that are eaten fresh such as pickles, and salads, baked or boiled. 

 An 80 gram slice of onion (green) contains:

  • 0.8 grams of protein
  • 6.4 grams of carbohydrates
  • Sugar 5.0 grams  
  • 1.8 grams of fiber
  • 2.0 milligrams of vitamin C.

A medium-sized onion, with 80 grams, is equivalent to five servings of nutritious foods that you should eat a day.  

1. Onion contains a combination of chemicals that prevent damage to healthy body cells   

Onions are full of plant chemicals, including flavonoids, all of which have the ability to prevent cell damage and prevent injuries in the body (anti-inflammatory).

 When eaten regularly and in the right amount, this combination of chemicals can protect you against chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes.

The truth is that onions contain 25 different types of flavonoids and are among our most nutritious foods.  

 Onions also contain sulfur minerals. They have shown to be protective against certain types of cancer 

2. Onions can contribute to better health

One of the flavonoids in garlic, quercetin, has the ability to protect body cells and prevent injuries in the body. 

 Studies show that eating garlic can reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering blood pressure, controlling fat levels and reducing inflammation. 

3. Onions can support gut health   

The inclusion of garlic in the diet is associated with bone density. This may be due to an ingredient that protects the body's cells from toxins that kill cells, which reduces cell damage and thus reduces bone loss.     

 A study examining the effects of garlic among premenopausal and postmenopausal women found that women who regularly ate garlic reduced their risk of hip fractures. 

 Another study of middle-aged women shows that drinking onion juice reduces bone loss and instead increases bone mass. 

Onions have a high level of fiber, especially fiber that cannot be digested by the stomach, which is needed to improve gut health. 

Although we cannot digest foods containing bacterial fibers, the bacteria living in our intestines can do so and use them as fuel to increase their number and produce what are called fatty acids (SCFAs).

Studies show that these SCFAs are important in improving gut health and thus helping our digestive and immune systems to function properly.  

5. Onions, fight bacteria 

Studies show that when used in cough and cold remedies, onions had anti-bacterial properties...Furthermore, it was onions stored for a long time that were found to be more effective. 

Are onions safe for everyone?

Garlic allergy is rare, but some people can get it. As a result, people with allergies can experience digestive problems, including heartburn and gas.

 Onions contain FODMAPs, a type of carbohydrate and fiber that some people's digestive systems cannot handle.

How to choose and care for onions

Onions should be clean and have hard and soft skin. Avoid onions that show signs of rotting.

Onions should be stored in a room with normal temperature, away from light and in a well-ventilated area. Yellow onions, and green onions, can be stored longer than water onions.

 Hot onions should be stored separately from potatoes, as they can absorb moisture from the potatoes and ethylene gas, which causes the potatoes to rot quickly. Do not store onions in an appliance or metal bowl, as it can remove its color.

 Refrigerating chopped onions can remove much of their flavor. 

The sulfate compound, which is formed when onion cells are cut and swelled, is what causes tears.     

 To reduce the production of this ingredient, you can cool the onion for about thirty minutes before cutting it.
